We have been doing a lot of things in the library this week! The kids are enjoying the new stations in makerspace this week. We are starting to use Blueprints and Blocks which is a building station that I wrote a grant for and received last week! The kids have different levels of "blueprints" that they can build from. We've also added more things to do with the Ozobots and of course our magnaformers and B-bots remain super popular! One thing I learned about at the TCEA conference I attended was ideas for our awesome 3D printer. Here are some things the kids and I tried this week. Check back for more! We also used Skype in my second grade classes this week to celebrate World Read Aloud Day. We skyped with author Sean Fay Wolfe and the students loved it. They learned what it takes to become a writer and that they ALL could do it! What a great week!

Good morning! It's the last day of January and LOVE is in the air...we are enjoying all the Valentine cards you have been sending. The students are already enjoying making cards for their family and friends.
I'm also including some pictures of second graders making their own mazes (all around the library) for the B-Bots to go through. They are getting good at coding them to move the way they want them to. It's so neat to see. Our new coding tool this week is called an Ozobot. It is a teeny-tiny circle robot. The kids are exploring what it can do this week. It is coded by using different colors and patterns. Pretty cool! We are going to start gluing our igloo this week...stay tuned for pictures! Happy Tuesday! We are going to be using Valentine cards in Maker Space the next two weeks. I would love to have a TON of cards for the kids to make their own Valentines for the friends and family. If you are able to donate a box or two, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
*Also, please keep sending in those milk cartons! We had several new stations this week in Maker Space. The students are loving the number app from Osmo. They have to create numbers to "pop" the bubbles and get fish into their pond. So fun!
We also are using the B-bot this week. The kids are trying to get it through the maze by coding its moves. The students are also making bookmarks with popsicle sticks. Look at the cool super heroes and minions! Of course, our Lego wall is always busy as well. One of the challenge cards this week is to build an upside down house. Isn't it good? *Remember we are collecting milk jugs to build our igloo. We still need BUNCHES! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas break! It was so good to see all the kids today...they were so excited to come to Maker Space this morning. There's nothing better than hearing the kids laugh and learn to make your day be great! Here are some pictures I took this morning. Enjoy! Happy 2017!
Happy Holiday Season! We are doing many holiday related activities in Maker Space and Library these next 3 weeks. The students are making seasonal Lego creations - Santa, snowmen, elves and even a Christmas tree! We are also making reindeer out of different materials. The students can color a Quivervision sheet and watch it come alive complete with "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" playing!
If you are able we are in need of pipe cleaners, ribbons, poof balls and any other fun holiday craft items you may want to donate. Thank you for your help! It's a great time in our Media Center. See you soon! Mrs. Boyer Hello! This week in the Media Center we are focusing on our Kelso skills and being thankful.
The kids have the opportunity to make a Kelso frog to help us remember about our Kelso choices. That means the difference between big problems (that the teacher or an adult needs to help with) or small problems (that the kids learn skills to deal with on their own). Also, a choice this week is to make a turkey out of paper rolls and write what they are thankful for on the feathers. Plus they get to tape the feathers, which of course is super fun! Of course our every day choices are available too; the lego wall, puzzles, Osmos and using Felt Board to create a Thanksgiving scene. We are very busy and very thankful for our wonderful school! Have a good week! Mrs. Boyer We had a great time at the Halloween Hustle! It was fun to hang out with friends and get some healthy exercise in as well. What a beautiful day! This Monday morning we have been very busy in Maker Space. The kids are having fun creating. We even made our own Halloween costumes using the app Felt Board. The kids loved making them and then being able to print them to bring home. I love seeing their excitement.
Be safe tonight! Happy Halloween! What a week it has been so far! It all started on Monday when Mrs. Zavala and our wonderful PTO volunteers set up the beautiful book fair. Then Tuesday night we celebrated literacy here at Westwood by inviting our families to school to have pizza, enjoy the book fair and learn different reading strategies from our wonderful teachers. The turnout was AMAZING!!! Since our Media Center is hosting the book fair this week, I have been going into classrooms and introducing a new Texas 2x2 book called We Forgot Brock! It is about a little boy who has an imaginary friend who gets lost. The students are listening to the story and then using the App Feltboard to create their very own imaginary friend. They have been so creative and have had so much fun! Don't forget next week is Red Ribbon Week. We will be celebrating with a different color every day. Check out the Westwood website or Facebook page to see which colors are which day. And remember next Friday, October 28th is our Pumpkin Parties!
