I cannot believe it is already May! We are having our last week of check out in the library. The students' books will be due back starting next week. Please make sure you return all library books. I will begin inventory soon. Thank you!
In technology class we are about to begin learning Stop Motion Animation. We will use Lego mini-figures to do this, so if anyone would like to donate more figures I would gladly take them!
The week of May 21st Christina Hicks from the Friendswood Public Library will be on campus to talk to each grade level about their summer reading program. If you have never participated...you should! It's so good!
Thank you so all our volunteers! And thank you for letting us teach your children all year.
Have a wonderful end of school and summer!
Our online book fair is happening now. Please go to the Barnes and Noble website and check it out. Anything you order and enter the ID for our school we will get part of the proceeds. We will use it to add the new Texas 2x2 books and some literacy titles the teachers need for next year. Thank you so much for your support!
Education Foundation came today! They helped complete almost all my grants. There's going to be lots of new activities and gadgets in makerspace very soon! I'm so excited!
Have a great weekend!
Hi! This month in library/makerspace we have been using our new products purchased with Scholastic book fair dollars. Because of the generosity of our parents, we were able to purchase many new items for the students to use. They have LOVED the light table! The students use it to sort jewels (they call them diamonds sometimes), build with see through blocks and use the colored see through letters to make words.
In tech class we have been learning how to use the data-base PebbleGo. The students have four catagories to choose from - animals, social studies, biographies and science. They can learn about 100s of topics. In first and second grade we are using this information to make a "presentation" on Buncee (a favorite website of mine). It's so fun to see how much these kiddos have learned this year.
Next month, we will continue to work on research databases and start using the green screen for sharing ideas.
Happy New Year! This beginning of 2018 has been a weird one that's for sure. After our first four days back, we had almost a week off again with our ice days. But, now we are back and have our regular schedule! Yea!
In the library and makerspace this week we are reviewing library skills and using some new items purchased from our Scholastic book fair dollars. Our kinder classes are learning about Sammy the shelf marker and getting to check out from other shelves, not just the Pre-k/Kinder shelf. They are so happy!
We are using our new listening center in makerspace and our light up table for building. The students are loving their new choices this week.
Thank you for supporting our library area by purchasing books from our book fair this year. Be looking for spring book fair information soon! It will be an online fair and one Barnes and Noble night!
So, I knew the district had purchased virtual reality sets for the schools to share, but I had never used them myself so I was a little afraid about what to do with them. A good colleague of of mine brought them over to me last week and taught me how to use them.
This week I have begun showing the students in my technology classes the goggles and devices. When I first turned on a "field trip" under the sea the screams of delight could be heard around the school! It is amazing!! So far this week we have been to the Statue of Liberty, the international space station, Natural Bridge Caverns as well as many under water locations. (sharks are some of our favorite things to see)
I am so glad I didn't let my fear about not knowing how to use the devices or what to use them for stop me from doing this lesson. It has been a joy to see the excitement in all my students' faces.
We have had a great week in the Media Center. The 2nd graders are learning how to find books in the library using the call number. The first graders are learning how to keep the shelves straight so everyone can find their books and the kindergarteners are learning how to use the Quiver app on the iPad. It is so fun to see all their faces!
After the students check out their books we have been exploring and building in Makerspace. They have been using Legos to create fall images, the Art Cart to create anything and everything...and blocks and Lincoln Logs to create buildings and bridges.
In technology this week, we are seeing a preview video about all the exciting new books the Scholastic Book Fair will have next week!
Don't forget the Book Fair starts Tuesday evening at Literacy Night.
Have a great weekend and Go 'Stros!!!!!!!
We got to start Library and Makerspace classes this week and it has been wonderful! We learned about Sammy the Shelfmarker and how he likes to keep the library straight and neat. We also checked out books and began making our choices in the Makerspace area. If you are not sure what this means, check out the Makerspace tab at the top of this page for some more information.
I have also added lots of pictures from the week to the Photos tab.
In computer class this week we are going over the Responsible Use Policy and beginning to talk about being safe online. It is very important for the students to know how to be safe and when to tell an adult if they need help.
I'm so happy to see all these kids every day. Thank you for sharing them with me!
We are all so ready to get the students back to Westwood. The teachers came back today and had a good day sharing stories, spending time together and preparing for the kids. Please know that we are here for you and your children. Together we will begin this school year again and we will be stronger than ever!
We have had such a good first week of school in the media center (library). The kids have been coming to technology class for specials in the afternoon. We have been talking about the rules in the library and computer lab and reviewing things we learned last year. I have enjoyed getting to know our new Kindergarten students and our new to Westwood students as well.
Our teachers are working so hard to help the students get into routines. Westwood has the BEST teachers! I am so lucky to be able to work with them. I love hearing all the precious conversations around the building about kindness and Bucket filling.
We will begin checking out books next week and coming to makerspace. Be sure to ask your child about what we learn.
If you have any questions about the library, computer lab or makerspace please email me at email@example.com
Thank you! Have a great week!
