We have had a great week in the Media Center. The 2nd graders are learning how to find books in the library using the call number. The first graders are learning how to keep the shelves straight so everyone can find their books and the kindergarteners are learning how to use the Quiver app on the iPad. It is so fun to see all their faces! After the students check out their books we have been exploring and building in Makerspace. They have been using Legos to create fall images, the Art Cart to create anything and everything...and blocks and Lincoln Logs to create buildings and bridges. In technology this week, we are seeing a preview video about all the exciting new books the Scholastic Book Fair will have next week! Don't forget the Book Fair starts Tuesday evening at Literacy Night. Have a great weekend and Go 'Stros!!!!!!!

We got to start Library and Makerspace classes this week and it has been wonderful! We learned about Sammy the Shelfmarker and how he likes to keep the library straight and neat. We also checked out books and began making our choices in the Makerspace area. If you are not sure what this means, check out the Makerspace tab at the top of this page for some more information.
I have also added lots of pictures from the week to the Photos tab. In computer class this week we are going over the Responsible Use Policy and beginning to talk about being safe online. It is very important for the students to know how to be safe and when to tell an adult if they need help. I'm so happy to see all these kids every day. Thank you for sharing them with me! We are all so ready to get the students back to Westwood. The teachers came back today and had a good day sharing stories, spending time together and preparing for the kids. Please know that we are here for you and your children. Together we will begin this school year again and we will be stronger than ever!
Mustang Pride...unleashed! We have had such a good first week of school in the media center (library). The kids have been coming to technology class for specials in the afternoon. We have been talking about the rules in the library and computer lab and reviewing things we learned last year. I have enjoyed getting to know our new Kindergarten students and our new to Westwood students as well.
Our teachers are working so hard to help the students get into routines. Westwood has the BEST teachers! I am so lucky to be able to work with them. I love hearing all the precious conversations around the building about kindness and Bucket filling. We will begin checking out books next week and coming to makerspace. Be sure to ask your child about what we learn. If you have any questions about the library, computer lab or makerspace please email me at [email protected] Thank you! Have a great week! Here is the link to the Friendswood Public Library summer reading program. Sign up begins June 1st! There will be prizes and TONS of activities all summer long. Please, please keep your kiddos reading! The public library is a great place to keep kids motivated.
http://friendswoodsr.evanced.info/ I can't believe it's already May...what a crazy year! I was looking back at where we started and the growth I see in these incredible children is amazing. When I look at what we have accomplished in technology class and Makerspace I feel so proud. The teachers we have here at Westwood are the best! They work SO hard with our children and they make my job so much better!
I am also thankful for our principal and her vision. Without Mrs. Moffitt's vision, this transformation of our media center would not have happened. She had a dream and it is coming true! Also, Mrs. Zavala is one of the hardest working people I know. She is so loving and kind to the children and they LOVE coming to see her in the library. She is a blessing to me and my job also. I guess what I'm trying to say is THANK YOU TEACHERS! During this teacher appreciation week, please know what you mean to the kids, the parents and to your fellow co-workers. You make our school the BEST! Happy spring! We are working hard in makerspace and technology class this month. We are learning how to use the green screen and using it to record the teachers doing read alouds for the kids in the gym in the mornings. They love it. It is so quiet in there when they are listening to the story.
I have been working with some second graders on a 3D construction website. We are going to begin 3D printing their creations next week. They are super excited about it! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE MILK JUGS AND RECYCLABLE ITEMS. WE ARE SPRING CLEANING NOW, SO WE ARE GOING TO STOP COLLECTING THESE UNTIL NEXT YEAR. Don't forget to bring in your change...we want Mrs. Moffitt to kiss a pig at Round Up! Round Up is April 29th. We have been having so much fun in makerspace this week. We are creating with the magnaformers, the blocks and the legos. The kids are still so fun to visit with about how they are building and solving problems with their plans. I love having these conversations with them in the media center. I LOVE my job! We also got to celebrate Mrs. Moffitt this week! She is the elementary principal of the year for FISD! We are so proud of her and so lucky to have her on this campus. She is the heart of our school and we love her! Have a safe and happy spring break! Can't wait to see those smiling faces on March 20th!
Look at all these amazing pictures! Our Read Across America Day was a HUGE success! We had Cat in the Hats and Cindy Lo's and Grinches in makerspace this morning! We had guest readers from Friendswood ISD and from Bales. We even had Mrs. Moffitt on the roof reading first thing in the morning! Yes! On the roof! What an amazing day!
